  2. RELIGIOUS MASTERPIECES FROM MUSEUMS

  24. The Clinton administration's quiet assault on America's 
  25. traditional values is having a dramatic impact on the fine arts. 
  26.     The Clintons' change in official policy has been particularly 
  27. blatant at the National Endowment for the Arts, which is again 
  28. funding obscene, pornographic, perverted and blasphemous art 
  29. projects. Now, officials there are also refusing to fund anything 
  30. with the slightest Christian taint. They cite separation of church 
  31. and state for denying funding to believers.
  32.     The trickle-down effect on the arts community has been 
  33. stunning. For example, the Arts Council of Fairfax County, 
  34. Virginia, which draws part of its funding from the NEA, has 
  35. yanked  four works of art from a 400-piece exhibition because the 
  36. four portray "religious scenes."
  37.     One was a photograph of a weathered adobe church in Taos, 
  38. New Mexico. Another portrayed an elderly grandfather reading a 
  39. prayer book. 
  40.     Tragically, the new anti-Christian policies are also affecting the 
  41. National Gallery of Art -- for decades America's greatest museum 
  42. of fine art. It is under political assault as never before by liberal 
  43. bureaucrats from within the Clinton Administration who are 
  44. determined that all symbols of Christianity be removed from 
  45. public display -- particularly in government buildings.
  46.     The Gallery's original art collection was donated on December 
  47. 22, 1936 by multimillionaire art collector Andrew Mellon -- and 
  48. included many priceless masterpieces portraying scenes from the 
  49. Bible by the old masters. Mellon also paid for the building, which 
  50. was dedicated and opened to the public in March 1941. 
  51.     Upon entering the Rotunda from the Mall entranceway, you 
  52. will still see Salvador Dali's magnificent portrayal of "The 
  53. Sacrament of the Last Supper," which declared the surrealist's 
  54. dramatic 1955 return to Christianity -- after losing his faith as a 
  55. result of conversations with Sigmund Freud in 1938. 
  56.     In Gallery One  is the Italian master Giotto's Gothic 
  57. masterpiece "Madonna and Child." In Gallery Three is "The 
  58. Annunciation," by Giovanni di Paolo while in Gallery Four you 
  59. will find Fra Angelico and Fra Filippo Lippi's world-renowned 
  60. circular painting, "The Adoration of the Magi," done in 1445. 
  61. Nearby is Botticelli's masterful portrayal of the child Jesus and 
  62. his mother, entitled: "The Virgin Adoring the Child."
  63.     However in Gallery Five, Francesco di Giorgio's "God the 
  64. Father Surrounded by Angels and Cherubim" is mysteriously 
  65. gone. It is only one of a significant number of Christian-oriented 
  66. masterpieces that are quietly disappearing from view each week. 
  67. Officials claim that National Gallery's art collection is so vast that 
  68. it must be rotated regularly -- and the majority of the Gallery's 
  69. artworks are held in storage, preserved for future display. 
  70. However, a disproportionate number of masterpieces portraying 
  71. Christ and scenes from the Bible are being shuttled off into 
  72. storage bins.
  73.     What is gone from public view so far in the National Gallery of 
  74. Art alone? El Greco's magnificent "St. Jerome," "Madonna and 
  75. Child," and "St. Martin and the Beggar" are in storage. Also gone 
  76. is Rembrandt's "The Circumcision of the Baby Jesus." 
  77.     At the Gallery's Seventh Street Entrance's central lobby, two 
  78. magnificent sixteenth century Flemish tapestries once stood out 
  79. -- portraying scenes from Christ's life. 
  80.     They were designed by Bernaert van Orley and woven in wool, 
  81. silk, gold and silver by Pieter van Pannemaker the Elder. "The 
  82. Crucifixion" portrays Christ in agony. "The Garden of 
  83. Gethsemane" portrays him in prayer before His Father. Both have 
  84. been removed to storage -- along with "The Procession to 
  85. Calvary" and "The Lamentation" although they had been popular 
  86. favorites since 1944.
  87.     To the left of the central lobby, an early sixteenth century 
  88. Flemish tapestry, "The Triumph of Christ," also called "The 
  89. Mazarin Tapestry," was composed of twenty-two warps to the inch 
  90. -- considered to be the best surviving specimen of its kind from 
  91. the Middle Ages. It has been removed from public view as well.
  92.     On the opposite side of the ground floor Main Lobby are the 
  93. National Gallery's collections of Prints and Drawings. There, "An 
  94. Architectural Design with Christ Given Over to the People," by 
  95. Guiseppe Galli da Bibiena is gone. So is Luca Cambiaso's "Cain 
  96. and Abel," Hans Balding Grien's "The Lamentation" and a late 
  97. 15th Century work, "The Crucifixion." Also gone from this room 
  98. is Rembrandt's magnificent and priceless "The Parable of the 
  99. Publican and the Pharisee," taken from Luke 18:9-14. Every day, 
  100. more Christian masterpieces are carted off to the basement.
  101.     A Christian carillon on the Capitol Building grounds has been 
  102. silenced as well. An 11-foot bronze statue of Senator Robert A. 
  103. Taft, son of past President and Supreme Court Justice William 
  104. Howard Taft, still stands out on the slope leading up to the 
  105. Capitol dome. A carillon behind it towers 100 feet above the 
  106. figure. Twenty-seven, beautifully-matched bells once pealed forth 
  107. with hymns to the honor and glory of God, such as: "Nearer My 
  108. God to Thee," "O God Our Help in Ages Past," and "Take Time to 
  109. Be Holy" 
  110.     At Christmas each year, carols rang out their joyous praise to 
  111. the Messiah. However, the magnificent music of the Taft Carillon 
  112. has been silenced. 
  113.     The Chief Engineer of the Architect of the Capitol's Office cited 
  114. complaints from the office buildings in the general vicinity of 
  115. Capitol Hill and says religious music will never be played again 
  116. during the week, although some may resume on weekends in the 
  117. unspecified future. How can this be? 
  118.     If you remember, when funding to blasphemous and anti-
  119. Christian artworks was cut off during the Bush administration, 
  120. the arts community loudly complained. Self-righteously, they 
  121. howled that it was not the place of the government to censor 
  122. artists or block their access to taxpayer subsidies. 
  123.     "It's something you would see in the former Soviet Union," 
  124. photographer Edgar Boshart, who took the picture of the Taos 
  125. church, is quoted as saying about the removal of his work. His 
  126. photographs were removed according to rules adopted that forbid 
  127. the display of "religious scenes" as well as nudes, weapons, drug 
  128. paraphernalia, violence, political expression or unpatriotic 
  129. subjects. What?The Gospel of Jesus Christ has been classified as 
  130. just as "politically incorrect" as drug abuse and street violence.
  131.     The portrait of the grandfather and the prayer book was taken 
  132. by Esta Gladstone, a professional photographer.  
  133.     "It is a memory of my grandfather, knowing this is the way he 
  134. chose to live his life," he said.  "I was trying to promote 
  135. portraiture, not religion. That the arts council or a group of 
  136. artists would shoot themselves in the foot and agree to this sort 
  137. of thing astounds me."
